Notice of Fraudulent Sweepstakes and Lotteries
Hundreds on consumers nationwide are being mailed letters indicating they are winners of a lottery/sweepstakes. Enclosed with each letter is a fraudulent check drawn on Bay Cities Bank payable to the consumer. The letters indicate the recipient is a winner of a Sweepstakes or Lottery and that the enclosed check is a small portion of their total “winnings” and is being provided to assist in the consumer’s payment of government taxes due on their total winnings. The letters further instruct the consumer to call a toll free number to speak with a tax consultant or lottery/sweepstakes agent in order to obtain instructions on where to wire funds for payment of their tax obligation and obtain the balance of their “winnings”.
Be advised that these are fraudulent transactions. Consumers should not provide any funds to these entities nor should the enclosed check be deposited or cashed. All checks are fraudulent and will not be honored by Bay Cities Bank. Appropriate federal law enforcement agencies have been notified.
